OBJECTIVE:
The student will be able to
understand farm animals and what they do.
DATABASE
MODEL:
Analyze a Problem/ Make a Decision
DATABASE
SOURCE:
Database created by Nancy Patterson and myself.
ACTIVITY:
After we have brainstormed the types of animals that are on the farm, the students will answer some questions on a worksheet . The students will also participate in their groups at a Writing Roulette activity. The final project will be to write a paper telling me the type of animal they would like to raise if they lived on a farm and why.
DESCRIPTION
OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
Day
One(1/2 hour):
1. To begin this activity, we will talk about farms and what you see on them, and why we have farms.
2. While we brainstorm, I will write the animals on the board. (so we can see if we get them all)
Day
Two(1 hour maybe longer):
1. They will have stations to work in: Encarta, Database, Writing Roulette (“Mrs. Hill had a Farm…”), each group will be given one animal to find out about.
2. At the Database, they will see if there are any animals that we didn’t get when we brainstormed.
3. At Encarta , each group will have one animal to look up and find information on. When they finish, they can look up other animals.
4. At the Writing Roulette, they will write to the story using the animal that they were given.
Day
Three(1/2 hour to 1 hour):
1. Go over what was done yesterday and start a fact-fact-conclusion worksheet. The database will be up and running so they can answer some questions if they need to.
2. Talk again about the paper they will do. Have them talk in with a partner about what they would like to write about and why.
3. Let the students look at the database again if they need to. Give them time to work, if they don’t finish, give them time the next day.
Day
Four (1/2 hour or more):
1. Have them finish their papers. They should have the teacher edit them and then make a final draft.
2. Let them illustrate their papers and share with the class.
