The Elf Description Grading Rubric

This rubric was designed with the help of students. The first 5 are things that were most important to a quality piece of descriptive writing. The last 4 are important, but don’t affect the writing in the same way. Each step along the way we revised, edited, and helped one another improve this writing. This is the final draft. Students that show strong evidence of each point will receive full points. Partial points may be given.

1.	Does the whole thing paint a clear and accurate picture of what is being described?
2	Does it use good, juicy words? Can you picture the elf in your head?
3.	Are details used to explain about each part of the web?
4.	Does the elf introduce him or herself at the beginning of the description so that you know what the writing is going to be about?
5.	Are the ideas and sentences organized into paragraphs?

6.	Does it sound like the elf is describing him or herself?
7.	Does it use correct punctuation?
8.	Does it use correct spelling?
9.	Does it use indents at the beginning of paragraphs?
