New York Stock Exchange
Visit:
NYSE
When you get to the
site, notice the ticker tape moving across the top of your screen. These
are real time prices for stocks being bought and sold at the New York Stock
Exchange (NYSE). Try to find the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and
the Standard and Poor Index (S&P 500).
Click on the link
to the trading floor, then on the hotmedia link. This will take you to a
page where you can take a virtual trip to the NYSE. By following the
instructions at the bottom of each picture, you can look at panoramic views from
several locations within the NYSE. Try as many as you like, but make sure
you visit the bell platform. Here you can listen while you watch the
activity on the trading floor.

Visit: DJIA
Home Page
Scroll down the page. This site lists the 4 indices included in the
Dow Jones Averages. We will only be concerned about one. The Dow Jones Industrial
Average.
At the top of the page, choose DJIA components. This page shows all of
the stocks included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. You will probably
recognize a lot of the companies.
The second column gives the
symbol
for each company. The symbol is how the company is recognized by wall
street. Some symbols are shortened versions of initials of the company name,
but some are not. You can almost never guess what a company’s symbol will
be.
The third column gives the price for each share of that company’s stock.
Clicking on the company name will take you to that company’s Web site. Visit
the Coca
Cola
and
Walt Disney
sites.

Quicken Stock Search
Visit: Quicken.com
In the search
symbol box, since you know
it, type in the symbol for Coca cola. This will take you to a page with
all kinds of information about the company you are researching. This is
the Quote
page, but it also contains lots of historical data and even some current
headlines. On the left side of the page, click chart.
Now you can see the same data in a graph. You can even set the parameters
for the graph. Change the period from 1 year to 1 month. There are
lots of sites like this one.
Use the symbol
lookup feature at this site
to help you find unfamiliar symbols. Check stocks,
type the name of a company in the space provided,
and click search. A help screen will appear. Check the circle for stock
and type in the name of a company for which you would like to find the symbol.
