Q: After I've registered for classes, how do I get started?
A: Your letter of acceptance from the Graduate Admissions Office provided you with a student number and a BroncoWeb email address powered by Google (see http://helpdesk.boisestate.edu/email/broncomail/ for more info). Your instructor will contact you in your new email address sometime the week before classes, and will leave a greeting and instructions on how to access the class. Our classes typically go live the first day of the semester, with first assignments being due the following week. If you plan to use your personal email account while at Boise State, you absolutely must put a forward on your BroncoWeb account or you will miss important email from your instructor, the program, and the university.
While you are waiting for your program to begin, review the hardware and software requirements, and get your equipment up-to-date. Also, send an email to Dr. Tutty to request permission to be added to the EDTECH listserv. This is how the department communicates with our students.
Q: Which classes do I take first?
A: Follow the sequence of courses as outlined in your program development form. Take core courses first, when possible, as electives typically assume a more advanced skill set, and should be saved for the end of your program.
Q: What about prerequisites?
A: See required prerequisites on the course descriptions.
Q: Who is my faculty advisor?
A: Your second letter from the Graduate College provides the name of your advisor. If you've lost the letter, please do the following:
1) Log on to BroncoWeb
2) From the BroncoWeb main menu, click the "Student" link
3) Click the "Registration" link
4) Under "Academic Record," click "View My Advisors"
Q. What other advising resources are available?
A. In addition to faculty advisors, students can also receiving advising for admissions, enrollment and program procedures. Consult the advising resources section of the site to learn more.
Q: What if I can't get together with my advisor? Or what if I need a question answered quickly?
A: Contact Paul Castelin at 208-426-1962 or paulcastelin@boisestate.edu
Q: I'm going to have a baby soon. Should I avoid taking classes this semester?
A: That's a personal decision, of course, but our professors are very flexible if you have to be incognito for a week or so. Be sure to send pictures to the Department office.
Q: What if something unforeseen comes up and I get hopelessly behind?
A: Don't wait until you are hopelessly behind; talk to your instructor as soon as you realize you're in trouble. Your instructor may work with you or may recommend an Incomplete, which allows you to retake the course at no additional cost. Incompletes have to be resolved before you can be approved for graduation. Taking a Withdrawal is far preferrable to just quitting. If you give up and "walk away" from a class, you will receive an F, which automatically bars you from further graduate study at Boise State University.
Q: What if I do get an F?
A: Hasta la vista, baby. That seems harsh, but that is the reality of an F in grad school. Grades of F are very infrequent because of the maturity of our students, but if it happens, it is possible to appeal for reinstatement. Appeals must be made to the dean of the Graduate College and the Department chair. Contact Paul Castelin for details.
Q: What if I have an unresolvable problem with my instructor?
Our instructors are very committed to your success as a learner. Please contact them directly if you have any problems that are interferring with your learning. If you are unable to resolve your problem directly with your instructor, contact the department Chair, Lisa Dawley at 208-426-5430.
Q: Can I transfer a course from another university while enrolled in the program?
- Transfer credits must be approved by your faculty advisor prior to enrollment in the course. Transfer credits are limited to six total units.
- The advisor will notify the student of the ramifications of transferring credit, such as the possible inability to obtain a graduate certificate. If the student still wants to transfer credit, the advisor will ask the student to provide a syllabus and an amended Program Development Form.
- The advisor submits the amended PDF (signed by student and advisor) and syllabus of the course to be transferred to the department chair (currently Dr. Dawley) for approval.
- The department chair approves or denies the transferred credit.
- The faculty advisor notifies the student of the chair’s decision.
