Regalia and Graduate Gifts

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the appropriate dress for the ceremony?
Regalia is required to participate in the ceremony. Business attire is suggested. We also recommend that graduates wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking in the procession and to the reception after the event. Please do not bring anything you need to carry except your name cards into the arena. There is no place to lock up, secure, or leave personal items.  You must either leave items with a family member or carry them with you.

Where do I order regalia, invitations, a class ring, and other items?
You can order your regalia through the Boise State Bookstore. It can be shipped to you or you can arrange to pick it up on campus. Be sure to order by the posted deadlines. The bookstore also sells a variety of graduation products, including announcements, gifts, mementos, and more. To learn more visit the bookstore here.

  • Gold Tassel
  • Students graduating with a Master of Educational Technology

  • Light Blue Tassel

Why are there different colors of tassels and hoods for each college?
Colors are based on the graduate’s degree. They serve as a way of making graduates recognizable based on the college in which they earned their degree.

Where do I place my tassel?
The tassel is placed on the left side.

How much does the regalia cost?
Costs change each year. The current cost for a master’s degree graduate ( cap, gown, hood and one tassel) is $90.  You can verify the current cost at the bookstore website here.

What is the Ed Tech medallion?
The Ed Tech medallion is a special award that recognizes your achievement and completion of our program. The design honors the founder of our department  Carolyn Thorsen, whose likeness appears on the medallion. Jerry Foster will present you with  a medallion to wear prior to the start of the commencement ceremony. This is a gift from our department. It is a striking sight when all of the Ed Tech graduates walk onto the arena floor wearing our medallions over their robes.

Do I get a medallion if I don’t participate in commencement?
Yes. If you cannot attend commencement, you will receive a medallion in the mail after grades are verified. Summer graduates should bring their medallions if they decide to participate in  December commencement.

What else should I know?
You can make a difference by donating your cap and gown to an “at risk” student at our local Frank Church High School.  Many students at this school cannot afford the cost of regalia required to participate in their commencement ceremony. Donation boxes are set up at the reception to collect regalia until 2 p.m. on the day of commencement.  Be sure to keep your tassel and medallion.
